You know those people who are hard to buy for because they already have everything they need or want?
My mom was never too big on gifts. It wasn’t that she had everything she wanted, but she just didn’t place a high value on the latest gadgets or fancy decor pieces. She was far from materialistic. Family was the most important thing in her life. She would tell me that all she wanted for her birthday was photos of her grandkids. They were her whole world.
One year for her birthday, I bought her a Lego set. She loved it! Not because she enjoyed Lego, but because her grandsons did, and this gift meant quality time spent with some of her favourite little men.
For the One
I was thinking today about what I could give to God to show Him my love for Him. The obvious thing that comes to mind is worship. Not that he NEEDS our worship, though. It’s not like He is insecure or unsure of His worth and we remind Him of His greatness and glory. I don’t think He is in need of our worship, although He delights in us coming to Him in that way.
But I started to think about my mom and the gifts that she desired. In the same way she wanted only gifts that celebrated her grandkids, I believe God loves it when we care for and celebrate His kids.
35 For when you saw me hungry, you fed me. When you found me thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I had no place to stay, you invited me in, 36 and when I was poorly clothed, you covered me. When I was sick, you tenderly cared for me, and when I was in prison you visited me.’ 37 “Then the godly will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty and give you food and something to drink? 38 When did we see you with no place to stay and invite you in? When did we see you poorly clothed and cover you? 39 When did we see you sick and tenderly care for you, or in prison and visit you?’ 40 “And the King will answer them, ‘Don’t you know? When you cared for one of the least important of these my little ones, my true brothers and sisters, you demonstrated love for me.’
Matthew 25:35-40 (The Passion Translation)
When we care for, love on, and celebrate people, we are demonstrating love for Jesus.
His desire for us is to care for those in need. To feed the hungry, clothe the poor, care for the sick… Demonstrating our love for Him looks like demonstrating His love to the marginalized, the poor, the vulnerable.
I believe this is a beautiful gift that we could give to Him, the One who has everything.
I love this and completely agree! I also love how you got your mom a gift that meant spending quality time with her grandchildren. My mom would love something like that too.
